It’s a holiday here in Canada (most of it, anyway), so the Words By Nowak offices are closed till Tuesday. Officially, today is the Civic Holiday, but it’s also known as Simcoe day or Emancipation Day, to mark the end of slavery in Canada. Bet you didn’t know we had slavery, huh?
Good riddance, slavery

Fascinating. I knew we had slavery in Canada, but I was unaware of the connection between this holiday and emancipation celebrations. It seems like the Civic Holiday is one of the more flexibly-themed statutory holidays.
Happy Emancipation Day, then!

We skip this holiday in the Yukon, because we still have slavery. We celebrate the discovery of gold later on in the month, instead.
